In Bhutan, we partner with RENEW. This organization provides relief and empowerment for disadvantaged women and adolescent girls.
The organization works to help girls and women who are victims of domestic violence, rape or sexual abuse, are commercial sex workers, or who are HIV-positive or victims of drug abuse.
RENEW not only empowers these disadvantaged girls and women but also aims to integrate them back into their own communities as independent, socially and economically productive members of the society.
Bhutan is a country that bases it’s values on Gross National Happiness and these sorts of abuses are rarely spoken of, making RENEWs efforts that much more important.
RENEW stands for Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empower Women.
During our tours, we visit either the main office in Thimphu, where they house some women and children, or their shelter facility near Paro, where dorm rooms accommodate a number of women and children and provide many other services (such as educational classes).
